Mission Statement

Kempsville Elementary School unites with its families and community partners to develop each child's potential, provide a strong educational foundation, and instill an enthusiasm for lifelong learning. (top)

Values and Beliefs Statements

KES believes that each student deserves a challenging and unique learning experience, while learning to appreciate and respect the accomplishments of others.

We believe that it requires the cooperative effort of the school, home, and community to instill aesthetic values--the appreciation of art, music, beauty, and the love of nature.

We also believe that the development of a positive self-image is a prerequisite of academic, emotional, physical and social growth. We will be supportive and fair in the classroom while being aware of the changing needs of students.

We believe that all students and staff should practice daily, "The Principles of American Citizenship" in order to foster an atmosphere of mutal respect and provide the best learning environment for all students.

We believe that in order to function in today's changing society each child should be using the most up-to-date technology available as a tool for enhancing the core curriculum and for becoming adept at gathering information and solving problems.

We are prepared to periodically reevaluate our goals, objectives and tools to meet the challenges of the changing times. (top)

History

Kempsville was once an incorporated town. Prior to that, it was known as Kemps Landing, taking its name from a local storekepper. The creek, part of the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River, was once a deep water landing, and goods for Mr. Kemp's store, as well as bricks and lumber, were unloaded there. It was also a shipping point for grain and other produce from surrounding areas. It is believed that the first skirmish of the American Revolution in Virginia was fought in Kempsville.

The old Episcopal Rectory was an example (reputedly one of the oldest in the area) of story-and -a half architecture, style developed to avoid paying the taxes levied on a two-story structure. Pleasant Hall, built in 1797, is one of the area's outstanding homes.

Kempsville became the county seat of Princess Anne County about 1775. The Court House was later used as a Baptist church. In the old part of the village there are two churches, Emmanuel Episcopal, which was once a part of the Old Donation Parish, and Kempsville Baptist church, organized in 1814 and now in its third building.

The first school on record in Kempsville was the Dickson Free School, built in 1794. In 1835, there was a Kempsville Academy (or Male and Female Seminary) which exsisted until the Civil War. (top)

Today

Continuing a tradition of excellence begun in 1961, Kempsville Elementary School forges into the 21st century with a renewed commitment to high expectations, innovative instructional change, and technological advancement. Located on Kempsville Road just south of the Princess Anne Road intersection, Kempsville Elementary serves students from established single family neighborhoods which stretch from Providence Road to just North of Princess Anne Road. The "pride of the tribe" is reflected in a dedicated staff, involved parents, and a supportive community whose teamwork is focused on the school's mission of providing students with the foundation needed for future success.
